Today, a friend reminded me of the time when I received my first bunny gift from my dad. I was still in primary school. It was after school and I went to my grandpa's house near the school to have lunch and attended my tuition class at a nearby housing area. When I came back from my tuition, I found out that the neighbour behind grandpa's house reared some rabbits in the cage. I was so thrilled! Dad saw the excitement on my face, but did not say anything.
I can't really remember how many days had left. But, I remembered that, I just came home from school that day and dad told me that he brought me a furry friend. I didn't want to believe him. He persuaded me to look underneath the rattan sofa I was sitting. I still didn't believe and didn't want to take a look, because, I was afraid he would then laughed at me for my stupidity. Somehow, in the end, I bent down and saw a white red-eyed rabbit at the far corner of the sofa and I screamed with joy!! Hahaha!! I can still remember the joy I felt that day and my silliness for not trusting my dad.
Soon, dad bought another 2 rabbits, a male and a female. This time they're white with black spots and black eyes. There I was, so happy with my 3 rabbits. Oh ya, the white one was a female too. The trio were my friends after school and I learned to take responsibilities to clean their cages, feed them and also clean after their feces which were non-smelly black pellets, if you feed them with vegetables. I usually pick them up with my hands. Don't worry, they don't melt in your hand. Hahaha. The only thing I didn't like was their smelly urine. Really really bad. Hahaha.
The happy trio then started mating and there were lots of babies! I still remembered seeing the first batch of baby rabbits with their eyes closed and no hair! You have to remove them from their mother as soon as they've given birth. I've lost a few babies when the mother ate the baby back when we left them with the mother. A friend of mine, whom brother is a vet told us that it could be that, we reared the rabbits on concrete cement. In their natural habitat, where they could dug holes for their babies, these scenarios may not happened.
Once, they've started giving birth, there were no end to it. First the black and white female, then, the white female. I was overwhelmed with lots of babies! Me and my brother took time to feed the babies, by catching hold of the mom. We hold their fore-legs and hind-legs, let them lied flat on their back, on our laps and placed the babies on the tummies, so that, they could suckle on the nipples. Can you imagine, we have to do that every 2-3 hours!! Sometimes, if we're not careful, the mommies will kick the babies off it's tummy, it happened many times. There were times, when mommy peed onto our laps too! Hahahaha. It was tiring, but fun to see the baby grow inch by inch and having more and more fur and finally opened their eyes. Sigh.. I actually missed those beautiful moments. Sigh..
But, in the end, an epidemic hit and killed almost all of my rabbits. That time, the baby rabbits had grown, but one by one, each of them died. Soon, the adult rabbits died too! Only 2 baby rabbits survived. That time, mom decided that we should give them away and that was the end of my rabbit adventure.
I will always cherish my moment with them. They've given me such sweet memories.
