Day 2
After the long day yesterday and with dad safely recuperating at the hospital, we decided to get a good rest to replenish all the lack of sleep we had, and made it to the hospital only around noon. Dad looked alright but seemed to have some slight fever. Dad's doctor came around in the morning and told him that he had arranged for the surgeon to meet us today but never said what time. So, it was waiting time at the hospital but we couldn't stay long because I have classes to teach that day, so we left early, hoping to come back after my class at night to see him again.
When I was getting ready for my classes, dad called and told me that the surgeon wanted to do the op and that with his heart condition, there would be risk and that he wanted to meet us tomorrow morning, 9am. Hearing this, I was a bit shock! Why the rush for a surgery?
When I saw dad that night, his fever had run higher and his blood pressure too. The temperature went up high because of his infection and that was the reason for the urgent surgery. The nurses had given us a bucket of ice water to help control his temperature. We were getting worried. They had also started to put him on a new antibiotic that night, hoping to control the fever.
Day 3
I was feeling very nervous about meeting the surgeon. If possible, I wouldn't want dad to be on the operation table. The surgeon was a very scary person, whatever he said sent chills into my spine. He said that dad's gallbladder had been infected and filled with pus, so he must be operated or he will die. But, he cannot be operated now, because, he has a heart condition that they didn't know its severity, therefore, it would be risky to do the operation. It was like, "do also die, don't do also die" kind of situation.
Luckily, dad's fever had subsided a little and the surgeon suggested that we see the cardiologist and do some examination on the heart before we decide what to do next. Therefore, Day 3 was filled with examinations of the heart and meeting the cardiologist.
At the end of day 3, we met the surgeon again. He told us that dad was having Intermediate level risk where he could die on the table during operation, which to him is considered a very high risk. And even if he came out alive, he might have problem walking or talking, if complication happened. He scared a great deal out of us!
He suggested that we must fix the heart first, in order to reduce the risk, which means, there will be double surgery for dad. Sigh.. Luckily, dad's fever had reduced drastically, so, he said to wait and see for another night. If the fever cleared, meaning that the antibiotic had managed to control the infection, meaning, surgery could wait. But, if the temperature went up again, then, dad had to be operated immediately with the risk. Sigh, it was an emotional day for everyone. Mom and dad cried after talking to the doctor. I cried deep inside. I wanted to be strong for both of them and my brother who was getting updates from me over the phone.
My brother hearing what the doctor said, took leave and brought the whole family up the very next day. Another day had ended, and I cried myself to sleep that night.
