Learning zills has always been a challenge to me. It is already difficult for me to play the zills rhythmically without having to miss a beat, adding movements to it, make them worse! I'm always very careful when practicing at home, because, of the "noise" that I will make. hahaha.. I do not want to have angry neighbours come knocking on my door! . But, if I don't practice, I will never improve, so, what should I do.. hmm.. Suddenly, it occurs to me that I can crochet a pair of zills muffles to silence the zills! And it was what I did! And now, I can practice without any sound. Yeay! (Check out my zills muffles in the photo above!)
But how to really learn zills effectively? I find that, practicing with the zills everyday is a must. I will go through the rhythm patterns every night, (ok.. not every night.. but every other night.. hahaha..) before I go to sleep with or without my zills and occasionally, I will try to add movements to it. Hadia taught us some basic movements that we can do to practice it with the zills and I also found some very basic but useful videos on youtube that will help for all beginner zills player! I am practicing my zills diligently now. I hope I can play them effortlessly, in the future.
Below are the videos by Kawakib. She breaks down the zills to very very simple patterns and adds some movements to it. I find it is a very good effective way to practice!
I will keep practicing and I hope those of you that are learning will find these videos useful. . Happy practicing!
Below is a zills solo performance by Kawakib. I hope that I can play and dance like that in the future!
